What Clothes Should a Newborn Sleep In: The Environment First.

Before we jump to a discussion about clothes, let us first create the perfect environment first.

Keep the lighting dim.

It is no surprise that dim lighting or darker rooms instigate sleepy feelings more. In fact, it puts less stress on eyes and lets your baby sleep happily.

Keep the temperature at 68 or 70 Fahrenheit.

If you have an air conditioner you can do this easily. Apparently, this lower temperature is perfect for sleep. If you do not own an AC you can do this with a fan. But, don’t place the fan directly over your baby.

If it’s cold then you can use a heater.

The mattress should be firm.

You may think those soft, bouncy mattresses will give your baby comfort. No, it will cause harm actually. Your baby needs a firm base to rest on so his body can grow right. So, keep the base firm and not too soft.

Onesies.

You do not want the cloth your baby is wearing to get over his head and make him suffocate. This is why onesies are the best choice. Apparently, it is best if it fits perfectly but a size larger won’t hurt either.

Your baby will grow into it.

Swaddles.

If your baby has the habit of swaddling when sleeping then that onesie will be enough as the swaddling clothe will provide warmth as well. Furthermore, this will help your baby keep calm against Startle Reflexes.

Footies.

If you feel that your baby’s feet feel too exposed you can make him wear a footie. In fact, footies are pants with built-in feet. Some even allow you to remove the feet to act as a pant.

Mittens.

Does your baby scratch his face? Then, you can make him wear cute and thin mittens that will prevent bruises and scratches.

A blanket.

If your newborn does not swaddle then wrapping them in blankets can provide them with the protection they need to feel. Furthermore, it will help to deal with cold temperatures as well.

Use Cotton or other natural fabrics.

These are not just breathable but very light and comfortable as well. If you want your baby to dream of being on clouds then these are the most suitable choices. Plus, they do not irritate the skin.

Avoid Nylon and such fabrics.

Nylon, polyester and other fabrics like this are not breathable. As a result, it will keep your sweating child wet before you notice the sweat. This could cause cold and cough and extreme discomfort. Therefore, it is best if you do not put your child through that.

Choose Chemical-free and Not Flame-Resistant Clothes.

As much as you may want to buy a flame-resistant fabric, they are not harmless. In fact, the chemicals in such fabrics may harm your baby. Moreover, flame resistant clothes will be very uncomfortable.

Check and Adapt.

You may have the best choice in clothes but your baby’s requirements may be different. So, make sure you check your baby’s state by placing your hands on his chest, neck or tummy. If he seems cold or sweaty, the clothes you carefully chose are not cutting it, are they?

So, you have to either add layers or remove them to keep your child comfortable and out of harm’s way.

Each newborn responds to his surroundings differently. As a parent or caretaker, you must respond to his needs well. Even if you know what clothes should a newborn sleep in, you may find that your newborn is not happy with your choice.

It is not advised to experiment with a newborn so the safest choice will be cotton onesies with removable blankets or swaddles. However, some newborns do not mind clothes and sleep like a baby (which they are). So, adjust according to your newborn.
